Renato Dattilo is a Network Support Specialist in Fuller Landau’s IT department. We sat down with him for a brief Q&A to learn more about his role and responsibilities, his new designation, and his secret hobby outside of work…
Q: What were you up to, before joining Fuller Landau?
I was a server and bartender at a restaurant for 15 years, before starting at Fuller Landau, but I had always been the go-to tech support guy in my family. They always told me that if I put my mind to it, I could make a career out of it. A few years ago, I had an epiphany. I realized that I wanted to do more with my life, so I enrolled back in school to study Information Technology. After college, I applied for a position in Fuller Landau’s IT department – the rest is history!
Q: As Network Support Specialist, what are your roles and responsibilities?
When I’m asked to describe my job, the easiest explanation is that I’m the first line of defense for the IT department. My job is to quickly resolve any internal technology-based problem, and to do it with a smile. Each day brings new challenges. I am always learning and putting my problem-solving skills to the test.
Q: What is the most challenging part about your role?
In a professional services environment like Fuller Landau, people need immediate access to the systems and network in order to do their jobs – so, any downtime is a really bad thing. The time constraints for resolving issues can cause a lot of pressure, but it keeps me on my toes and I enjoy the challenge. When I don’t know how to fix something, I do my research or bring in other members of the IT team. I just refuse to give up until the issue is resolved. One time, I woke up at 2am in the morning with the answer to something that had stumped us all. The gears in my brain are always working!
Q: What do you enjoy most about working at Fuller Landau?
What I do within the firm is appreciated. That’s something new for me, and it makes me feel welcome and respected. We have a great group of people at Fuller Landau, and it’s really easy to build a rapport within the team.
Q: You just received your CCNP designation. Can you tell us a little bit about this?
CCNP stands for CISCO Certified Network Professional. When I went back to college to study IT, I loved the networking course. My teacher told me about the CCNP designation and really encouraged me to go for it, so I did. After I got my associate-level designation, I started working at Fuller Landau, and studied on my own time for the professional-level designation. If anything were to happen to the firm’s network, I feel confident that I would be able to come up with a solution. And I’m not stopping now – I plan to add a few more designations to my name in the near future. I’m really grateful for the support I received, along the way.
Q: What do you get up to, outside of the office?
One of my favourite pastimes is biking around the lakeshore of Toronto, and finding the perfect tree to relax and have a picnic under. I also really enjoy cooking, and I make the meanest sandwiches around. I learned my sandwich craft in France. It is a skill that has served me well in life.
Q: What is something most people wouldn’t know about you?
I’ve travelled to every continent, except Antarctica. In my 20’s, I backpacked through over 20 countries, and would sleep in parks or train stations – never hotels. I’m also terrified of heights but I went sky-diving recently for a friend’s bachelor party. I’m never doing it again – it just cemented my fear of heights!
Q: Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies?
I have a collection of over 5,000 vinyl records, and I also collect comic books, on the side. I used to be a disc jockey, and I still hit my turntables a few times a week. Believe it or not, my skills actually came in handy when I made a music mix for our rookie performance at Fuller Landau’s Holiday Party, last year!
Thanks for the interview, Renato, and for all your hard work each and every day. We hope to hear you rocking your turntables at Fuller Landau’s next team event!
