Pre-Approved Direct-to-Tax Program

This program centres on three tax-related competencies – compliance, research, and planning:

  • Compliance – you will focus on the preparation of various types of returns such as personal, corporate, trusts and partnerships, ranging in complexity levels.
  • Research – you will assist in research and analysis of non-routine tax issues, such as M&P and SRED tax credits, disposition/acquisition of assets or investments, issues involving deceased taxpayers, etc.
  • Planning – You will assist with the analysis of potential corporate tax planning opportunities, such as safe income analysis, optimization of corporate structure, creditor protection, etc. You will be exposed to analysis of personal tax issues such as income splitting, use of RRSP, being an employee versus self-employed, etc., as well as assist with the development of the estate plans based on client’s needs and objectives.

There is also a significant amount of time devoted to financial accounting and certain audit competencies. You will need a strong understanding of financial accounting to assist with your career progression in tax. As part of our training program, you will be on a six-month rotation to our Audit and Accounting group, working on a variety of clients, on progressively complicated files and sections of larger files.

You will also work with our non-resident clients, ensuring that their financial information used in preparing their Canadian corporate income tax returns corresponds to accounting standards accepted in Canada, such as ASPE.
